SWEETEST GIRL
We lost our sweet English Golden Retriever Darby when she was one year old. She passed the way every English Golden Retriever probably longs to do: during a game of fetch. We had a necropsy done that was inconclusive, but the best guess is that she suffered from an aneurysm. We never got to breed Darby, so we never met any of her puppies, but she was a blessing to us and we thoroughly enjoyed her for the short time we got to spend with her. This was her description on our website before we had to say good-bye: Our little Russian girl, Darby.  Oh, how we love this girl!  Of all of our English Golden Retrievers, Darby is the most atypical.  She has a slightly more slender build and a little longer legs, and her coloring is simply breathtaking.  She is extremely difficult to photograph, as the camera seems to pick up gold that the eye doesn’t see.  In person, Darby’s ears look as if an artist took a paintbrush and ever so slightly frosted her ears and her spine in the lightest gold.  Freshly bathed, her hints of gold are absolutely stunning.

She is a perfect example of how the phrase English Cream Golden Retriever came to be (though a misnomer), as she is such a creamy, beautiful girl! Darby has a very interesting and impressive pedigree.  Her mama was brought to the U.S. from Russia and comes from very famous English Golden Retriever lines, including Dream Max and Tallygold.  Her grandfather is an extremely accomplished English Golden Retriever, earning both his International Field Trial Diploma and championships in Skijoring!

He is often described as a white golden retriever as his coat is quite pale. As for her personality, there is something very special about Darby.  My dear friend Monique constantly tells me, “You know, Darby is really my dog, she just lives with you.”  My parents came to visit and my Mom held 4 month old Darby in her lap for hours on end.  My sister-in-law asked me if there was any way I could part with this dog.  My sister has chosen Darby as the dog she someday  wants to have.  Suffice it to say, if you decide to come visit us at Nicholberry Farms, prepare to fall in love with Darby!

One of the things I love most about Darby is that she is just such an English Golden Retriever.  She is zealous about the water, she never tires of fetch, and she would rather you get carpal tunnel than stop petting her.  The second she hears a hint of humans, she is at their side, leaning in for some love.  She is stereotypically all the best of an English Golden Retriever, and yet she isn’t hyper.  She likes to come in the house and lie on the cool floor, content to simply be near us.  She is a delight and we dearly love our little Russian golden retriever!
